Stay Safe on the Sea in the Autumn Winds

While many people are bemoaning the end of summer, there are plenty of windsurfers who are packing their gear with glee. The sun may be slightly more scarce but the wind is not, making this time of year ideal for those seeking adventure on the sea.

Whichever season you choose to windsurf in, however, there are some natural features that you should check out before ever leaving the beach.

The weather

You may think that conditions are perfect when you set out but checking a decent weather forecast before heading out will minimise the risk of being hit by an unexpected storm.

Sea creatures

While British waters are generally safe in terms of the creatures who frequent the depths, it is still a good idea to be aware of any unwanted visitors to the area, such as the dangerous Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish.

Tide times

Checking out the tide times is vital every time you plan to windsurf. The main reason is that you do not want to go out at low tide and get back at high tide on a beach with a steep gradient and find yourself being pummelled by big waves or, worst still, end up being driven against a sea wall. Even if you do not end up in danger, you could discover you have a very long walk to your original starting point if you head out at high tide and get back to a long, gently sloping beach when the tide is low.

General advice

Never windsurf alone and do not head too far out. Unless you are extremely experienced, try to stick to harbours and enclosed bays as much as possible, and avoid an offshore wind at all costs. It is also a good idea to invest in a pair of decent windsurfing boots with rubber soles as you never know what the sea might conceal underfoot.
